Kennet & Avon Canal, Midgham

Brief description of fishery:

Midgham Water is a stretch of the south bank of the Kennet & Avon Canal at Midgham. The fishery is shared with Reed Thatcham AA and holds roach, perch, bream, tench and carp. No night fishing is allowed.

The Reed Thatcham Water stretch starts at the Reed Thatcham AA notice board just upstream of Midgham Lock and finishes at peg 37 which is marked on the weir bridge.

Reed Thatcham AA holds matches on Midgham Water from time to time and during such matches CSAS members are not permitted to fish on the venue. Details of these matches will be published in the Newsletter, website & forum.

Fishery rules

  1. General
    1. The Society has the right to fish on a stretch of the south bank of the Kennet & Avon Canal at Midgham, known as “Midgham Water”. The fishery is shared with Reed Thatcham AA and holds roach, perch, bream, tench and carp.
    2. The Reed Thatcham Water stretch starts at the Reed Thatcham AA notice board just upstream of Midgham Lock and finishes at peg 37 which is marked on the weir bridge.
    3. Reed Thatcham AA holds matches on Midgham Water from time to time and during such matches CSAS members are not permitted to fish on the venue. Details of these matches will be published in the Newsletter, website & forum.
    4. The following special conditions apply:
    5. Members must show their CSAS membership card upon request to any Reed Thatcham AA bailiff or CSAS bailiff. All anglers must be in possession of a current EA rod licence.
    6. Trespass on adjoining land, either when approaching or leaving the water is forbidden.
    7. Fishing below the Reed Thatcham AA notice board or above peg 37 is forbidden.
    8. No fishing shall take place without a suitable landing net being made up and ready for use. Gaffs are forbidden. All nets must conform to EA or controlling bodies guidelines & made of knotless non-metallic mesh.
    9. The use of gorge hooks, dead or nightlines or leaving baited rods unattended is forbidden.
    10. Live fish baits are forbidden.
    11. Fishing with purchased sea fish dead baits such as sprats, mackerel, etc, and artificial lures is permitted.
    12. Under normal circumstances the transportation of fish from one swim to another is forbidden. The only exception to this rule is that if returning the fish to the water at the place of its capture endangers the welfare of the fish or angler. In these circumstances the fish must be returned to the same reach of water as it was taken from.
    13. Fish must not be removed from the venue or offered for sale.
    14. All hooks larger than size 16 must be barbless. Hooks smaller than size 16 are permitted to be of the micro-barbed or whisker-barbed type.
    15. No more than 2 rods may be used at any time.
    16. Bivvies are forbidden.
    17. Tins of any kind, including tins of sweet corn or luncheon meat, are forbidden on the venue.
    18. All swims must be entirely free of litter of any kind at the end of a fishing session.
  2. Night fishing
    1. Night fishing is not permitted.
  3. Close season
    1. No coarse fishing is allowed between 15th March and 15th June.

Midgham Water is accessed from Brimpton Road, which is a turning off the A4 between Woolhampton and Thatcham.
